How we read a chart
An excerpt of our interpretation
To this elemental contrast is added a contrast of tempo. The person's modality is decisively cardinal — five planets set in the initiating signs, a constitutional orientation toward beginning, opening, breaking new ground. The person, by contrast, is fundamentally mutable, five planets arranged in the adaptive positions, a nature that receives, reshapes itself, and flows into the spaces that circumstance opens around it. Together they form a complementary rhythm: the person proposes the direction, the person shapes the journey. But the shadow of this complementarity is that the person may come to occupy too much of the shared territory with her cardinal momentum, while the person may adapt so gracefully that her own center begins to dissolve into the person's orbit. The mutable nature, under-resourced, becomes shape-shifting to the point of self-loss; the cardinal nature, unchecked, becomes occupation dressed as leadership. Neither outcome is inevitable. Both are possibilities that will flicker at the edge of their shared life, asking to be noticed before they harden into habit.
And yet the very contrast that generates this difficulty is the source of the magnetism. Air is drawn to water the way articulation is drawn to atmosphere; each element hungers for what the other possesses naturally. The person finds in the person an emotional depth and responsiveness that the person's air-dominant nature tends to intellectualize from a distance. The person discovers in the person a clarity and purposefulness that her mutable waters cannot quite generate alone. This hunger is mutual, and it is honest, and it is the first note that sounds when they meet. Beneath all the complicated music that will follow, this original attraction — the attraction of what you are not — continues to play. It is the tonic of the whole composition.
When one looks into what the person actually feels when the person is nearby, the answer deepens into tenderness. The person's Moon falls into the fourth house of the person's chart, an overlay of extraordinary intimacy. The person touches, without needing a map to find it, the very root of the person's inner life — the private cellar of memory and ancestry that most people never see. There is an instinctive quality to this. The person does not need to be taught where the person is most tender; she simply knows, with the knowing that water has for the shape of the land it meets. For the person, whose emotional life is scattered across incompatible registers — a Moon in fire, a Jupiter and Saturn in water, the whole affective range distributed without a central organizing principle — having the person's lunar presence so deeply embedded in the domestic soul feels both nourishing and disorienting. It is the first time, perhaps, that someone has known where she lives. And being known in that way is, like most forms of grace, not entirely comfortable.
The person's Moon, reciprocally, falls into the second house of the person's chart, the house of what one values, what gives a sense of material and psychic safety. This quieter overlay suggests that the person's emotional rhythms, her moods and inner weather, become entangled with how the person measures worth. When the person is restless or withdrawn, the person may read this as a threat to something precious. There is a tender vulnerability here that neither may recognize immediately, a place where an ordinary moodiness can trigger a disproportionate response. And the quincunx between the person's Moon and the person's Venus adds a further unease: their emotional needs and affectionate instincts do not quite align, requiring constant small adjustments, an ongoing negotiation that never quite settles into resolution but keeps the whole connection alert and alive.
